The main objective of P.E.D.A. is to prevent underage substance abuse and thus future criminal activity and/or early death. Presently, young people begin abusing substances at a very early age. DWI, suicide, domestic violence, rape, and burglary are all related to such abuse.

P.E.D.A. uses many types of educational resources for drug and alcohol abuse prevention among this age group. P.E.D.A. has created an interactive media production produced by Warehouse 21, a teen art center based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and designed by Impact DWI's program director, Margaret Oster, to promote further outreach towards schools with peer-to-peer presentation of this media production.

P.E.D.A.'s screenwriters are teens who demonstrate their own experiences and those of their friends, superbly acting events that commonly take place during the challenging and delicate middle and high school times of a teen's life.

P.E.D.A's website will educate teens to further understand that sometimes external factors like bad influences and environment are too much to overcome and can often lead to substance abuse.

The P.E.D.A. Program is intended for high schools only, or high risk populations due to the realistic and graphic nature of its scenes, however, Impact DWI has also produced another version, which is appropriate for general population.

Motor vehicle crashes were the leading cause of death among young Americans, aged 16 to 20 in 2002.

In 2002 and 2003, 21 percent of persons aged 16 to 20 reported that they had driven in the past year while under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs.

ASAP is another Impact DWI Program which focuses on utilizing a peer mentoring strategy because the influence of peers is especially formative for this age group. ASAP will equip peer mentors to provide accurate information about drugs and alcohol and referrals to community resources when appropriate.
The ASAP project will focus on educating the peer mentors to ameliorate the devastating impacts that alcohol and drugs have on individuals, families, and our state.

Do peer education programs work?

Instead of having prevention programs taught by adults, would you be more comfortable with peers who made the wrong choices educate you on substance abuse based on their own bad experiences?
